It doesn't sound like herpes. Herpes (as I know it) starts out with a small bump that develops a blister in the center. It may develop into an open sore but it's not a bleeding sore. I wouldn't dare try to diagnose your boyfriend's problem but it sounds like it may be caused by a zipper, rivet, or the contents of a pocket.
