When I was tested for herpes (swab-culture), it was negative, but the small sores may have already started healing over. I would not rely on the culture test though, since I know that I have it even though the test was negative.

The first signs of an outbreak for me are some pains in the butt like you described, or some tingling/numbness or itching on some area of the groin/shaft/head where the tiny blisters/rash may develop a day or so later. I get this every few months or so, since I first noticed it, however the butt pains and tingling do not always develop into sores. If I take a lot of Lysine (an amino acid) at the first sign of the symptom, then it seems to help prevent an outbreak.

If the sores/rash itches a lot and is uncomfortable, and/or looks like tiny bubble blisters, then you probably have it. If its on your groin then it just looks like tiny red rash or itcy ingrown pimple.
