: I don't think you should worry about it. You get herpes by having the virus enter your blood stream, and for that to happen you would have to have 'intimate' contact with her infected area. I've had herpes for many years and my wife still does not have it, even though we have sex regularly (but only when it's safe). I don't think you have anything to worry about, (unless you are sexually intimate with your friend).
I think you could be careful and ask her to be careful with you about drinking from the same glass or if you had any cut or sore on your mouth especially to avoid oral contact around eating, just about like you would with the flu or a cold. Wet towels at the gym, especially sitting naked on the steam room or sauna bench might be an area to be careful in.
I think it is great that John doesnt get it but if you are going to worry about it then it wont hurt anything to make a few rules or watch yourself a little. They all say that it is unlikely to be transmitted from the toilet seat or those other cliches. At least you wont get it genitally unless you have direct contact with it.
We all need to keep our sights on not allowing it to ruin our lives. Cheers.
