Herpes is believed to be almost always spread through direct contact with an infected person's sores or "shedding" area. There is some suspicion it can be spread by sharing clothing or towels but I can't find any verification of that. Oral sex can spread herpes from "cold sores" to genital (or other) areas. Some infected people have no signs or symptoms and do not know they have herpes. Sometimes it may take years to show up. See "Bad News" posting below.
