: : I have had sex before with a few partners. I have had for a long time now small pimple looking things on the top of my penis shaft right below the head on the back side. they are small and are white on the top but mostly red. They don't hurt, itch, or break. They are most visable during erection. What could this be. Is is possible to have acne there. They don't pop so could they be worts or maybe irritation. Please help.

: what exactly is a culture. How do they do it?
: Anyone know?

: Thanks for the answer Karen.

A culture is a laboratory procedure to detect the presence of micro-organisms and to identify which specific ones they are. In the case of herpes, they're looking for the herpes simplex virus (HSV). The doctor basically takes something like a large q-tip and using the cotton tip, swabs the affected area to collect the micro-organisms so that they can be analyzed (it doesn't hurt). The "q-tip" is then placed in a test tube and sent to the lab where they "grow" the organism that's on the cotton tip and then do tests on it to determine what it is. I hope that explains it well enough.
