: hi my name is jose and iam 16 years old and my blood presure is up. can you send me information about how can i lower it down or what can or cant i eat to have a better healthy life......????????????

: thank you ....jose

Dear Jose:
First, I would determine if you are taking your blood pressure properly, i.e, you should rest in a comfortable chair for at least a couple of minutes before you take your blood pressure. Based on your age, it should be around 120/80. If it is high, continue to sit for a couple of minutes then take it again. If it is high with at least 2 readings at a time on several different occasions, I suggest you contact your doctor to be tested for hypertension (high blood pressure). This is especially true if you have hypertension in your family.

Other things you can do are as follows:
1. A regular excerice program cleared with your doctor.
2. Limit salt in your diet, including foods high in salt such as pickles, even though you may not be salt sensitive. Salt tends to retain body fluids which can increase your blood pressure to some extent.
3. Avoid stress. If you feel you are stressed for any reason, then I suggest you take a stress management course which are offered by hospitals from time to time at nominal fees.
