: I am a 38 y.o. male currently experiencing problems with high blood pressure. I am 6'-0" tall, and weigh 295+/- lbs. In the past I started experiencing HBP but it went away when I started taking Lotenzin 20 mg. I started noticing that the medicine was making me very irritable. I stoped taking it for several months and I was doing fine. Just recently I started having the HBP again and severe. The Lotenzin has helped to keep it down. I notice that when I eat, the pressure goes up again. I am cutting back on eating, especially chocolates, sodas, cookies, etc. (I have a HELL of a sweet tooth). I would like to know which foods are likely to cause High Blood Pressure, and which ones are likely not to cause it. Any information will be appreciated. Please e-mail me. Thanx.

I would recommend that you get a copy of "Protein Power" for starters to gain an understanding of what causes high blood pressure and then follow the guidelines for reducing it. The book only costs about $6.00 at any bookstore or online at Amazon.com. You are on the right track by eliminating those sugary carbs. Carbohydrates cause you to retain fluid. Since the vascular system is a closed system, more volume = more pressure. Also, insulin, which is released when you eat those carbohydrates, has an effect of constricting the arteries which tends to drive the BP up. If you could cut your carbohydrate intake way down ( 180#). Alan S.
