Robin, hypertention also runs in my family. I don't have it, but my uncle and grandfather do. When my uncle (then 19) was drafted for the Veitnam War, he was turned down because of hypertension and put on blood pressure meds for years. He finally got into martial arts (Akido), got on a mostly vegetarian diet, and for the last few years he has been off of his meds and just fine. By the way, he has always been very active and normal weight.

Maybe you could think about doing something like this to see if you can naturally bring down your hypertension. Yoga might be a good choice. It wouldn't hurt, anyway. Good luck!
