: i am 39 years old have not seen a doctor in about six years. i had some blood work done, my cholesterol level was 193 hdl 27 and triglyceride lvel was 436 that sounds very high compared to other on the board. i have a doctors appt. on the 11th. should i be concerned.

Yes you should concerned. What does your diet consist of? The latest research points to the triglyceride/HDL ratio as the better predictor of heart disease. A ratio of 5 or less being considered good and the farther you are above the 5 the greater the risk. And your ratio is way over 5 (approx. 16). One way to raise your HDL levels and lower your triglyceride levels is to adopt a diet higher in protein, lower in carbohydrates, and avoid partially hydrogenated vegetable oils, which suppress HDL levels. Meat raises HDL, Carbs raise triglycerides. Cut out that partially hydrogenated vegetable oil and anything made with it like McDonalds French Fries. In my opinion, one of the worst things to happen to public health is when McDonalds and others switched from stable beef tallow to partially hydrogenated vegetable oils in their deep fryers. This stuff is like plastic fat and your body tries to incorporate it into the cells, but they don't really fit anywhere. Enough ranting. Alan S.
