: I have high total cholesterol (327) but I also have a very high HDL (112). I am 48 years old, I exercise daily and eat very nutritiously - the picture of health. Doctors recommend Zocor but I am reluctant to do so. All 5 of my siblings have this high cholesterol. My father did suffer from heart disease but he did not practice a healthy lifestyle. Am I foolish to refuse treatment?

Hello Nancy,
First things first. Don't let the high HDL's give you a false sense of security. The condition you have sounds like hyperalphaproteinemia which is not treated using a simvatstatin (Zocor). Your combined LDL's and VLDL's fall in the range of 215 which is not too great either. Sometimes your condition is caused by Mn (manganese) deficiency. What are your triglyceride numbers? Doctors often ignore the tg's because they don't think they're contributors to vascular disease. If they don't read the latest of clinical studies, they'll be running out of patients. They are just as bad, if not worse than LDL's. I believe 50% of all heart attacks could be avoided by a Good antioxidant regimen that includes E, Selenium, and C. Superoxide Dismutase is also great. Go to the local nutrition shop and get some Manganese Glycinate Chelate, 20mg twice a day, then check your fasting lipid profile in two months. Post your figures here and we'll work from there. God Bless..... B.T.
