: I was just diagnosed as having slightly low thryoid. (TSH test) My doctor tells me I have hyperthyroid. I have never had this problem before. In this year however I have been taking loads of immune boosting supplements and herbs. And other health supplements from the health store. Could these supplements have caused an autoimmune response in my body, and then my immune system turned to attack my thyroid???? I am new to this and need some solid advice please!!!!

Dear Potato,
I don't know if you have had any response on your posting but here is what I know about thyroid illnesses. It is a genetic problem in a lot of people and sometimes it comes out later in life. Since I am a small person and fit the profile to the tee for hypERthyroidism I am checked yearly even though I have no genetic background for this. So far the results have been negative but one never knows. I myself wouldn't worry as long as you take the medication that your doctor prescribes. However I am here because someone close to me has hypOthyroidism and is coming down with illnesses that we thought had been erraticated like the mumps. He was vaccinated THREE times for this and other childhood illnesses and has no immunity to them. He also comes down with flu after flu after flu. Hope this sheds some light for you.
