First I'd like to say that I feel for both of you. This is a difficult decision to make.
My 6 year old son has been through multiple operations since he was 6mos old. His first was a mastoidectomy followed by several sets of tubes, adenoid removal, etc.
His most recent surgery was 3 months ago to remove a tube that was turned sideways and to repair a large hole in the same ear (all created by a rupture due to infection). The ENT tried the gel repair and it did not take. Now we have to resort to having the typanoplasty.
I know that the whole procedure sounds very scary. As with any surgery, there are many cons to consider. There are also many cons to leaving the hole untreated. Based on the research I have done, not treating the perforation will more than likely lead to the loss of hearing, possible formation of cholesteatoma (sp?)tumors and eventual destruction of the bones of hearing. After all my research, I am having the procedure performed on my son. I guess since I've already been through a similar sugery (the mastoidectomy) I know what to expect. In the end though, it really doesn't make it any easier.
There are many websites that contain lots of information on this kind of thing. The most useful search so far for me has been using the AOL search engine and typing in typanoplasty. There is an audiology page that has detailed descriptions of all kinds of procedures with pictures.
Anyway, I wish both of you the best in whatever you decide.
