: : : My son is having a second surgery for this to remove a wall of skin growing rapidly inside his ear. I have not talked with anyone who has even heard of choleasteatoma, just wondering if anyone hear has?
: : I had a cholesteatoma removed when I was 24. At that time they also had to take one of the hearing bones.
: : 6 months later I went in and they made sure they had removed all of the cholesteatoma cells and also put
: : in a prosthetic hearing bone. My hearing is normal and I have only had a couple of bad ear infections. I hope
: : this helps.

: Yep. Sorry to see your child has it. I grew up with it and then finally had radical mastoidectomy couple decades ago. Unfortunately, it has reared its ugly head again recently and I may have to go in for more surgery after all this time. Make sure he has a CT scan. They can see it.
: My daughter, 17 yrs old, is having a revision mastoidectomy originally done 2 yrs. ago. The condition was and is clearly visable on a CT scan. It appears, in her case, that tissue remains allowing fluid and air to build up and a constant draining is the result. They will leave the ear packed for a longer time following surgery. Lifetime visits for periodic draining will most likely result. Good luck to you and your son.
