: : I am 32 years old and 38 weeks pregnant. I recently recovered from an ear infection about 1 month ago. NOW, about 1 week ago, I ALL OF A SUDDEN began hearing a loud pulsating sound in my left ear. THEN, the sound moved into the right ear. Basically, I hear the pulsating sound in both ears now. Also, there is a small amount of dizziness associated with this.
: : Is this a sign of inner ear problems? Do people usually have inner ear infections in BOTH ears? Has anyone EVER had the pulsating sound in the ears? If so, is this pregnancy related (as three doctors have said) or is this more serious? I'm hoping someone may have already dealt with this before.

: Hi Dottie,
: I'm 34 and was interested in your post. At the end of June, I had a weird little repeated "thumping" sound (kinda like when your eyelid occasionally gets a little spasm in it, you know?) in my left ear. It cleared up, but then a week later I began to be very off-balance, kinda dizzy feeling. Dr. diagnosed "acute labrynthitis" last week but the meds haven't helped much so far. Does my "thumping" sound like what you had? If so, maybe it IS related to your ear infection... Also, my husband and I are trying to get pregnant...and I wondered: how did your doctor treat you for your ear infection considering your pregnancy?
My ear infection was treated with Amoxicillin (which, I understand, is benign during pregnancy). The "thumping" you describe is not exactly what I'm hearing. I am not feeling a "twitch" like a muscle - but rather hearing an artery. THREE dr's including my ENT have attributed this to my pregnancy. It actually has subsided somewhat over the past several days.
Regarding Labrynthitis, you probably already know that it is an inner ear infection. If it is a virul infection- then it will heal pretty much by itself. If it is a bacterial infection, then you are probably on antibiotics right now, I presume. The good news is that inner ear infections usually clear up on their own- because most are caused by a virus. You should be feeling better very soon.
Good luck getting pregnant- and remember to STAY AWAY FROM SICK PEOPLE when you finally do get pregnant! Also, if you start one exercise ( I was walking 2 miles a day)- I don't think it is a good idea to just start another kind of exercise midstream- (I had started swimming about 1 mile a day when I got really sick with bronchitis- then upper respiratory infection- then ear infection). And I most attribute this to CHANGING my normal schedule at 8.5 months in.
Just exercise with caution going into your 3rd trimester.
Out of curiosity, is your ear "thumping" in tune with your pulse? Can you hear it more or feel it more? My e-mail is firstname.lastname@example.org
