I have been reading many of the posts on this board and have learn a lot about inner ear problems from all of you. I know that it is a complex and difficult area of medicine to diagnosis properly so I am reaching out to all of you for advice and direction.

My daughter, 35 years old, became very dizzy while riding her horse one day and almost fell off. The paramedics were called, couldn't find anything wrong, but suggested she see an ear specialist. He removed a great deal of ear wax from her left ear and sent her on her way. Then the dizziness ( a spinning type of vertigo) returned and she also developed a severe ringing in the affected ear. She returned to the ENT and he said she probably had an inner ear problem caused by a virus and that it usually lasts about 2-3 weeks.

That was almost 2 months ago and she has seen 2 additional ENTs with the same diagnosis. When she developed severe headaches and a "heaviness in the back of her head", they had a MRI done to rule out acoustic neuromas/vestibular schwannomas. The MRI was negative - no tumors.

Her current ENT has also ruled out benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) by having her do Epley or Semont maneuvers (I'm not sure which) for a week. Since her condition didn't improve, he has stated that the cause is not BPPV. However, I'm not quite as confident since a certain percentage of patients don't always respond according to the "book" with these exercises. She has also had a hearing test which indicated that she has lost much of her hearing in the left ear at the higher frequencies.

If you have read this far, I thank you and here are my questions:

- Has anyone in the group ever had BPPV diagnosed and if so, how was it done?
- Have any of you been diagnosed with vestibular neuritis or labyrinthitis and if so, how was it done?
- Has anyone had similar symptoms as my daughter and found a different diagnosis.

I would appreciate any help you can provide. I am desparately trying to help my daughter and I can tell that she is becoming more and more despondent as each day and week goes by without knowing what her condition is or whether it will ever get better. Thank you.

Paul
