: Just got back from the GI dr. Didn't want to hear anything I had to say about Celiac Disease. He's doing a blood test. Everything I have read about Celiac disease states the only sure test is the small intestinal biopsy. Anyway, he's also going to do a sigmoidoscopy. I know about colonoscopies. Can anyone give me info on a sigmoidoscopy? I know I don't get to be sedated for it...thinking about just canceling. I get so tired of dr.s treating everyone like they are hypchondriacs. I've put this off for 20 years just for this reason. All he would say is that it's "just irritable bowel" and that my intestinal muscles are overactive. If that's true, then why does my diarrhea stop when I avoid eating gluten? Sorry to keep going on about this. I'm "just irritable". Thanks for any info on sigmoidoscopies...gotta be better than a lower GI!

Angie - I'm so disappointed for you! You have waited so long for this appt., just to be blown off like that!! Run, don't walk, to a new doctor!! See if you can find a female GI doc. For any men reading this - please, please, please don't take offense to this! My all time favorite doctor, who delivered all four of my kids, is a man, and I love him dearly. It seems, in the case of tummy trouble, a woman is much more nurturing and sympathetic, at least in my case. As for the sig., I have never had one, but if it is for diagnostic purposes, I would just have the colonoscopy. The sig. only examines the left side of your colon, so if the problem is on the right, it won't be picked up. If you are going to go thru the whole prep anyway, why not have the whole thing looked at. Hang in there, and you go girl, until you are satisfied with the diagnosis! When it comes to medical care, we have to be assertive!! Take Care, Janet
