To make any colon work properly unless there is a physical disability you need liquid and bulk particuarly in the form of water soluble fiber. The reason it works is it absorbs water and don't give it all up in the colon--so the bulk in form of feces moves like it suppose to down the GI tract. The colon extracts liquid from the feces and does not do any digestive functions. Janet is right Apple juice contains the right stuff but not the kind you buy in stores --all the enzymes and nutrients are dead---fresh from a juicer with a little of the pulp should be used.If you don't have a juicer--a friend might.Fresh apple juice will turn brown almost before you can drink it----faster than an apple.I have done this and a half a glass will give me diarrhea.

I also have used prunes boiled in a microwave and let stand overnight then take the pulp without the peeling and mash it with the juice then-- drink/eat it. Prune juice is one of the only foods that does not oxidize resulting in a super bowel mover.
Other veggies that are mostly water soluble are carrots, beets, potatoes, sweet potatoes to name a few.
I"ll bet your family--for 3 genertions are not big water drinkers. MY wife thinks you only suppose to take a bath in it so it is not that uncommon. Most people also only get about 20% of the right kind of fiber in their Diet.
