: : Harry,

: : My question is, what would happen if you took the psyllium husk regularly, but didn't get enough water? Would it still help any? My mother has had problems, for many years, with bowel movements occurring without prior feeling or notice. She's seen specialists etc. and the only thing left they say would be a colostomy. (one Dr. said they might have cut the muscle when she had a gall bladder surgery) One of the specialists had recommened Metamucil & I think she might have misunderstood how & why she was supposed to take it. She thought it was to help 'clean her out' so she wouldn't have an accident when she wanted to go somewhere. I've got her interested in maybe trying psyllium, but there's another problem. She doesn't drink fluids, never has. She has about 1/2 cup of coffee with meals and a sip of water with her pills. She MIGHT drink 2 sips of water on a 100 degree day after working in the garden for an hour. Her body seems to operate differently than others, she never ever sweats. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks, Ann S.

: Hi Ann,
: Good to hear from you.We all assume everybody drinks enough but as I've said so often we are all different.I know several people that don't sweat even working in a very hot garage in July in South Carolina.

: I have no experience with giving psyllium and not drinking enough water but Dr.William B.Salt,MD in his book " Irritable Bowel Syndrome" in the section on dealing with constipation says that taking supplemental fiber without adequate fluid may worsen symptoms. It may help----I just don't know. She may need it the regular way with alot of water because of it's cleaning effects.
: God Bless---Harry

Hi Guys! I've heard instances of people who do not drink enough water with fiber and end up with an intestinal blockage that has to be surgically removed. I can't remember if it was Psyillum or not, but it is something to consider...
