: Has anyone heard of IBS starting after Gallbladder removal? I never had any problems with abdominal discomfort until I had mine removed, & the docs think it's IBS....
Some people have chronic diarrhea after having their gallbladder removed.Bile salts that is secreted by the liver goes into the intestines for digestion of fat.The bile is absorbed in the last part of your small intestines---if there is too much bile produced(no gallbladdert to hold the excess)and can't be absorbed then it goes to into the colon or large intestines and causes diarrhea as well as irritation. There is two prescription medicines used to treat high cholestrol by combining with the bile ,Questran and Colestid. They both are use to treat this type diarrhea. I read that they are not absorbed by your body. One of the side effects people have using them for cholestrol is constipation.I first heard about Questran on this board and decided to find out about this method of controlling chronic diarrhea. It is well documented in medical literature.
Your doctor should know this---ask Him??? Let us know how you make out on the New Board.
I wish you luck with your Doctor. You may even have to take Metamucil for bowel regulation.
