Yep, I had surgery and had my thyroid removed. There are other, less invasive measures, but they didn't work for me. My surgery took 5 hours, in the recovery room for 24 hours and in the hospital for 5 days. They were a little reluctant to do the surgery because they were afraid I would have a heart attack on the operating table. I was 25 at the time (10 years ago). My condition was getting worse, so we opted to remove it. Surgery went without a hitch. I you are cold and have dry skin, that might indicate a low thyroid and they simply give you supplemental thyroid medication. I had a friend that had Graves and was given the drug PTU (can't tell you what it stands for) for a year and was completely cured. PTU didnt' work at all for me, but my condition had gotten way past the point of drugs helping. Women more than men have thyroid problems. Have the thyroid test...it can't hurt a thing. Good luck and let us know how it goes. Hope to see you on the new board!
