Andrea,

My daughter is 4 1/2 and has had kidney reflux since birth. She has had quite a few ultrasounds as well as VCUG's. In the beginning, her reflux was a grade 5 to 6 - as bad as it gets. She was put on a maintenance antibiotic to prevent further infections. This has worked although we have had to monitor her closely to keep track of any effects from the antibiotic. She made fairly steady improvement until she was three, when it was a grade 1 to 2. Unfortunately, when we went back to have her checked at 4 years, she had gotten worse. She was back to a grade 3 to 4. At that time, her doctor ordered a cystoscopy. This is a fairly simple test done under anesthesia to check the condition of the kidneys and the ureaters. This past June, she had bilateral ureateral reimplants. Basically, they went in and repaired her ureaters. I was terrified for this to be done but it was not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Even though she has a 4-inch incision, four days after the surgery she was up running and playing. I have learned more about this than I ever wanted to know. The tests are not fun but compared to the possibility of kidney damage, they are preferred. Another thing... my oldest daughter also had reflux although she outgrew hers at age three. The doctors say it's common for it to run in families and boys are just as susceptible. When my third daughter was born, an ultrasound was scheduled just to be on the safe side. Good luck!

Andrea,

: My daughter is two years old and has had kidney reflux since birth. The catheter may be used for doing a test called a VCUG which will determine if reflux does exist and to what degree the reflux is. Kidney reflux is a situation where the urine will drain out of the kidney, into the bladder, but if the ureaters are not working properly, the urine will kick back up into the kidneys. This can cause scarring in the kidney and the ultrasound will help to determine if scarring has occurred within the kidney.

: Please contact me directly if I can help you out further.

: Karen
