: I have a four year old who has had four bladder infections in four years. Doctor is now concerned that she may have a Kidney Reflux. What is this? They are suggesting a catheter and kidney ultrasound. I'm wondering if this is a common cause of bladder infections? Anyone experience anything similar? Thoughts and ideas are greatly appreciated! Andrea
I have a 4 yr old that was diagnosed with kidney reflux 2 yrs ago. She had a kidney infection at least once or twice a month. The catheter and ultrasound is a painful process that my daughter has had 5 times. Last February, she had surgery to correct the problem. Kidney reflux is either a valve that is not working properly, or a ureter that is too short. The valve is supposed to connect the kidney to the ureter and the ureter to the bladder. What happens is that instead of the urine going to the bladder, some of it goes back up the ureter and into the kidney(therefore causing an infection). Kidney reflux is rated from a level 1 to a level 5, 5 being the worst. Mostly it can be treated with an antibiotic called Septra/bactrim that is taken everyday. The only side effect of the medicine is that you can be burned very easily if you stay in the sun a long time. Also, you must be sure to drink plenty of water because it is a sulphur based medicine. Please e-mail me and tell me how your daughter is.
