Sandra, first you should tell her that you want to learn more so that you can help her. There are so many different types, so many stages,
that you should ask her more about her own diagnosis. A key word to look for is chronic or acute. Depending on her
diagnosis, if it has been confirmed, you should ask her what you can do to help. Does she have
kids ? That is a major concern. In my own case that is the main concern. Who will care for my daughter if things turn for the worse ?
Mostly let her know she can count on you, any time, any place. That you will talk. That you will
help look into various treatment options and their locals, if she wants your help. She may not want it directly for the moment
as she comes to terms with the diagnosis, but knowing you are in her corner and available
is reaaly important. Be comfortable in talking about the subject and be open and direct. This is about the best advice I can give. And, oh, yes,
I have really appreciated those who have volunteered to check for a bone marrow match, even though I may never pick that
option.
