I don't believe that STI-571 (named Glivec November 30) is being withheld due
to restructuring at Novartis. Glivec is only in Phase III of clinical trials and made
it this far in about one year. With the exception of a few HIV drugs,
I don't believe there is any other medication that has made it through testing so fast.
At one point, there was a shortage of the drug since it was not a priority (only a relatively
small number of CML sufferers compared to some other diseases that might be more lucrative).
Thanks to the Internet, this has changed.
If you are interested in following the progress of Glivec (STI-571), the most informative
website I know of can be found at:
The Novartis site also has some information about STI-571, as well, including
some information on trials.
I have CML and am participating in the trials here in Canada. Unfortunately, I didn't get
STI-571, but am being treated with Interferon. There are about 850 people worldwide
who are taking part in the current phase of this study. Novartis announced recently that they were pulling
out all the stops for STI-571 and that the short supply has been remedied.
All that is left is for finalization of the studies and approval by the Government.
If STI-571 works as well as it is expected to, they may suspend the trials and
make it available to everyone sooner than expected.
