: : : My son-in-law just found out that he has POLYCYTHEMIA VERA. What is the cure for this. : : E-mail me at Collins@Leonce.com : : Leonce : My son was diagnosed at the age of 12ys. Roferon alfa-2a was the medicne he has been on sence. He is now 15, and doing great!!!!. There is no known cure.(except bone marrow transplant) I was diagnosed 15 months ago. I suffered a heart attack 6 years earlier (at 37) which the doctors now attribute to the polycythemia. It is very unusal for a women to have a heart attack that young. (My cholesterol level was only 178) Unfortunatly, it was not followed up as a clotting disorder until my platelet level neared 1mil and my Hct. was 51%. I am now taking hydroxyurea and am closely followed. I hope to beat the "11 to 15 year" life expectantcy after diagnosis, I still have one child at home and hope to see grandchildren some day. Good luck.
