: Can anyone tell me exactly what 'RSV' is.....I understand it is a respiratory condition in younger children.......Thanks for your help.....Katrina

I AM A RESPIRATORY STUDENT GRADUATING IN MAY. FROM WHAT I HAVE LEARNED, RESPIRATORY SYNCITIAL VIRUS IS RELATED TO THE VIRUSES SUCH AS PARAINFLUENZA, MUMPS AND RUBELLA. IT IS VERY COMMON IN SMALL CHILDREN, PRESENTING AS A COUGH, POSSIBLE FEVER AND MALAISE. OFTEN NOT DETECTED RIGHT AWAY AND MAY LEAD TO BACTERIAL INFECTIONS, BUT USUALLY NOT FATAL. IT IS SPREAD BY CONTACT OR AEROSOL TRANSMISSION, AND PATIENTS IN HOSPITALS ARE OFTEN KEPT IN ISOLATION. USUALLY ONLY SYMPTOMS ARE TREATED, BUT SEVERE CASES TRATED WITH INHALED DRY POWDER ANTIVIRAL MEDICATION, CALLED RIBIVIRIN. IT IS MORE PREVALENT THIS TIME OF THE YEAR AND IN SPRING. THAT IS ALL I CAN THINK OF OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD, BUT FOR MORE INFO TRY THE AMERICAN LUNG ASSOCIATION WEBSITE-THAT MAY ALSO LEAD YOU TO OTHER GOOD SITES AS WELL. IF I CAN BE OF ANY OTHER HELP, PLEASE CONTACT ME. :) TAMARA
