: : : Since December, I've been sick. First, I had a bout with influenza, which left me with bronchitis and escalated my asthma. As soon as I finished my antibiotic for bronchitis, I started running a fever again, and when I went back to the Dr. he said it was a sinus infection. So onward to a stronger antibiotic. Still didn't feel good. Saw a different Dr. who felt it was viral and told me to up my asthma meds. Started feeling better around 2/1. Decided that I couldn't go through another series of this ever again, so I decided to quit smoking (was about 1/2 pack per day smoker). Dr. gave me Zyban. Three days into the Zyban, started coughing again, wheezing, and bronchial spasms. The coughing is worse when I am lying down. The bronchial spasms happen immediately following a cough, it sounds like I am finishing each cough with a sneeze. I am so sick of coughing all the time. I have neck pain now every time I cough. Anyway, went back to the Dr. He thought it was from quitting smoking, and all the crap in my lungs was clearing out. Problem with that diagnosis is that the coughing and wheezing started after I began Zyban but BEFORE I quit smoking (I quit in second week). So, here I am still coughing and wheezing and using my inhaler 3 times per day. There's got to be something else wrong. Could it be the Zyban (I am still on it)? I asked the Dr. but he didn't think respitory problems were a known side effect. In all this time, I have not been given a chest Xray. I really think I need one. I am so afraid it's lung cancer or some other horrible disease. Do my symptoms sound like anything familiar????
: Dear Fran,
: I do not have any answers. But, I do know that if you don't do what you feel you should, in your heart, you won't be able to forgive yourself. Our minds and bodies have a deep connection, if in your spirit you feel the need for a chest x-ray, DEMAND it! I know a part of you is afraid, but you & I also know the worst thing to do is put it off. I hope I have not been too blunt, but it looks as though you might have needed a sounding board. Best of Wishes.

Hi Jessica, shortly after I posted this, I went back to the Dr. with yet ANOTHER bout of bronchitis, and he did have me get a chest Xray which was thankfully normal. He then thought I might be having a problem with Gastric Reflux, which might be a cause of respiratory infections, and order an upper G.I. and put me on a prescription antacid. Meanwhile...he sent a sputum sample off to the lab, and at my follow up visit today he informed me that as it turns out I have some obscure bacterial infection, so for the FIFTH time since Christmas I am on another antibiotic. Hopefully, this one is IT. Geesh!
