Hi, I had a spontaneous pneumo-thorax when I was 19yrs old. It was extremely painful and I had another one (on the same lung) when I was 21yrs old. My doctor wanted to operate and I refused, but I agreed that if it happened one more time, I would have the surgery. I'm now 28yrs old and have yet to have another pneumo (knock on wood). I am also very thin, however I'm only 5'4".
The surgery that was offered to me was where the doctor would make an incision in the middle of my chest, pull my ribcage open and rub his hand over my lung to get rid of the cyst.
I hope that your son never has to experience a pneumo again. I thought that I would definitly have another one by now....but I was wrong!
Good Luck!
