I was started on Elavil in 1988 before a lot of the more modern medications for depression came out. It gave me relief from depression and saved me from suicide and a meaningless life. I did experience significant weight gain. There are other medications for depression that may work as well and not case the weight gain either.
I am not up on the information about thyroid and food sensitivities related to depression. I do know that DEPRESSION IS NOTHING TO FOOL AROUND WITH. Left untreated it can lead to suicide. Let the doctor make the medical decisions. Bring the other information to his attention or check with other professionals. DO NOT POSTPONE NEEDED MEDICATION WHEN IT COMES TO DEPRESSION. It is a killer illness, but it doesn't have to be. Properly treated, a patient can lead a very normal life. Good luck.
