Hey Mark
I am not a doctor, and diagnosing over the internet would be difficult anyway, but what you are
describing sounds like a typical case of OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder) to me. There are
many forms of this disorder - some people wash themselves excessively for fear of germs,
others have the compulsion to check their stoves, and still others have mostly obsessions, for
example, yes, the obsession that they might hurt somebody (there are people with OCD who
are obsessed they might stab their children with a knife, even though they REALLY don't
want to do it...)
Ok: Yopur thoughts are NOT "bad thoughts". They are obsessions. Obsessions are intrusive
thoughts that are disturbing or scary and that are hard to get rid of. Actually, the more one
wants to get rid of them, the more intrusive they become. Sound familiar?
You are not at all alone with this problem. It is really quite common. And, the good news is:
As far as I know (I don't want to say I am 100% sure because I am afraid I might be wrong,
but pretty sure I am) people with OCD do NOT follow through on these thoughts. They know
that they don't even want to THINK them and definitely don't want to hurt anybody.

I hope this helps. By the way OCD is treatable, with medication but also with therapy. Yes
talking to a doctor might be a good idea.
