Hey Chris

this message is for you, and everyone else that posted or is interested in social anxiety and depression.

Ive suffered from social anxiety and depression for about 6-7 years now. Im 22. I know exactly what your talking about, extreme anxiety in every situation involving people, confusion, stumbling over words, complete isolation from friends and family.

Ive been seeing a psychologist for over a year now, and this helps tremendously. Despite what Matty?!!? said, the carpender, social anxeity is mostly inherited through ones enviroment and not their genetic makeup. That goes for depression as well. This means that you *CAN* improve if you put in the effort. Agian, despite what MAtty says, Cognitive Behavioural therapy has been shown to be extremely effective in treating all different forms of anxiety, and depression, including social anxiety.

This has helped me immensly. If i look back a year ago, and see how far ive come, im amazed. Last year this time i was sucidal, not talking to anyone, extreme anixety all the time around people, never approaching strangers, talking to girls, ect.....

now, Im approaching and chatting with people, learning how to choose to trust people again, forming relationships with new people, learning hot to fight my negative thoughts in an effective way.

Sorry this is so long winded. Here are some tips;

1. start seeing a psychologist. Theyre trained to deal with the psychological aspect of mental disorders rather than the biological aspect of mental disorders like psychatrists. this is a huge point because a) psychatrists treatment will consist primarly of medication when the causation of social anxiety in most cases isnt genetic.
b) psychologists will have more time to spend with you and help idientify you illogical thinking

2. buy this book, FEELING GOOD ;THE NEW MOOD THERAPY by DR DAVID BURNS

this book helped changed my life. My psychologist recomend i read it. Its a self help book that teaches you how to idientify and restructure your depression and anxiety causing thoughts- cognitive therapy

3. last but not least. You have to push yourself. This is what behavioural therapy is all about. Pushing yourself into situations that are anxiety provoking, so you become more accustomed to them, and they progressivily become less anxiety provoking. And guess what.....there goes your social anxiety!! say good bye to it my friend :)))

I have struggled a terriably long time with this, and now i know how to get better. One of my most terriable fears is public speaking. Im joining a public speaking group this week that will help me practice this. And you know what,??! Im terrified :))) but Im going to push myself, and its going to be alright.

Cognitive Behavioural therapy. Find a good psychologist that you feel comfortable with and get started my friend. You can do it!!
