Anti-depressants aren't happy pills. If they were they would be sold on the street and passed out at parties. There is no market for this because this is not how they work.
They are used because there is a deficiency in the body. The brain is not producing enough seratonin. Something important for healthy moods. Studies have found that depressed people have less seratonin in the spinal column than people that are not depressed. All an SSRI does is to tell the brain to produce more. Lack of Seratonin is the most common reason for depression. Psychiatrists usually will start with seratonin and SSRIs to correct this. When the SSRIs don't work, usually a psychiatrist will prescibe a different type of anti-depressant (MAOI) which works on a different chemical in the brain. They do not alter personality or act like alcohol and cover up feelings. They help the body produce something that is lacking but should be there.
