hypothyroid can be secondary to an immune system problem which causes food allergies. Autoimmune thyroiditis is also related to celiac disease, which is an intolerance to gluten (wheat, rye, oats, barley). If you are suffering from a "mental illness", it may really be a symptom of a physical illness. An immune system problem/food allergies can really wreak havoc on the whole body, including the brain, and boy is it tough to get a correct diagnoses. Conventional medical doctors are only treating one symptom at a time, they are not so good at getting the whole picture. Check out this list:
"Top 20 Diagnoses Before a Diagnosis of Celiac Disease
* anemia
* irritable bowel syndrome
* psychological stress, nerves, imagination
* diarrhea
* IBD
* diabetes
* spastic colon
* ulcers
* virus (viral gastroenteritis)
* chronic fatigue syndrome
* weight-loss
* allergies
* amoeba, parasites, infection
* gallbladder disease
* thyroid disease
* cancer lymphoma, digestive
* colitis
* cystic fibrosis
* lactose intolerance
* reflux"

There are "intermediate" (celiac like) gluten sensitive enteropathies too, where you may not test "positive" with the regular lab tests, but removal of gluten from the diet fixes lots of what may be ailing you. More info: go see

www.celiac.com

It has tons of info on many, many related problems.
