Unusual stress can cause extra demand for some chemicals needed for normal functioning, and this demand will exhaust stored bodily supplies of those chemicals. Menstruation and childbirth are culprits for many women, depleting substances like B-3, B-6, and zinc, the loss of which may cause painful emotional upsets, or lead to the well known "post-partum depression". Toxins such as industrial pollutants, or drugs and medicines with toxic side-effects, can cause vitamin C deficiency since C combines with toxins to combat them and is destroyed in the process.
