ms and back surgery

Has anyone with MS had back surgery to correct a disk problem in the limbar spine are? My cousin was told by one specialist that she must have surgery with steel rods inserted at either side of her spine to correct the problem. Another neurologist told her not to have any back surgery whatsoever because of her MS. She doesn't know what to do, but is in severe pain and really needs relief. Any sugggestions?
