I was diagnosed with myositis ossificans when I was 16 years old. I am now 36. It started as a tender area above my ankle and 3 months later was a softball sized lump. It was unrelated to trauma, which made it hard to diagnosis. After a biopsy and a bone scan they ruled everything else out. I was on painkillers for 3 months until it stopped growing. Then the doctors waited another year until they confirmed it was no longer growing, and they removed the lump completely. No problems since.
