My 69 yr old mother just passed away from respiratory failure. She had been on Zocor and was taken off about eight months ago. She had developed loss of muscles in her hands and was unable to even button her blouse, a few months ago she began falling down. We put her in the hospital two months ago, was diagnosed with very low sodium and potassium, stayed four days and was sent home. A few weeks later we took her back to the emergency room, again she was admitted with sodium level so low , they said she should have been having seizures. Stayed seven days that time. Two weeks later we took her back to emergency room because she was having trouble breathing. This time they said she had "touch" of emphysema and a "horrible muscle disease." She developed pneumonia this time after third day in hospital and had to be placed on respirator where she remained until her death four weeks later. Doctors thought she may have had ALS, but tests were inconclusive. They said the reason she didn't come off respirator was because her diaphragm was not working, because of problems with muscles. Please if anyone has any information that could be helpful in determining what may have caused this please respond. Thank you.
