Studies show that progesterone has a much bigger effect on bone density than estrogen. Progesterone brings calcium back into the bone. It can reverse osteoporosis. The synthetic progestins have nasty side effects, though. It is best to find a doctor who is familiar with natural progesterone. The natural is an exact copy of human progesterone and is processed by the body in the same way. There are no side effects. This is discussed in What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause by Dr. Lee.
