: : One of my 10-year-old cousins has just been diagnosed with osteoporosis. I don't know if it's IJO (which I assume is bad from what I've seen on the 'net so far) or not, but what I was wondering is if anyone could direct me to some pages about childhood osteoporosis..so far I've found a few, but nothing that's really painting a clear picture for me as to what this diagnosis means exactly. Replying to my email would be best since I don't get on the 'net too very often anymore. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me.

: CHRIS,
: Does your cousin have a genetic disease that the doctors felt may lead to decrease bone mass? How did they determine that he had osteoporosis, did he have a DEXA scan? It's interesting because I am currently involved in DEXA testing. At age ten the bones have not developed and reached peak adult bone mass. If his bone testing was compared to peak adult bone mass it would definitely show osteo. However, most bone density testing machines can compare bone density in a ten year old to age-matched values to determine if his bone mass is normal for his age.
: With a child his age, now is the most critical time for him to build his bones through increased calcium intake. You can find the National Osteoporosis Foundation at WWW.NOF.ORG and they will have the listing of optimal calcium intake for children and adults. hope this helps.
