: Does anyone have information regarding up-to-date dosage for Fosamax for the treatment of someone who already has osteoporosis? My 66 yr old mother has been told at a seminar in Zimbabwe that her current dosage of 10 mg once a day (i.e. 70 mg a week) can be lowered to 20 mg twice a week (i.e. just 40 mg a week). She was told that this was the latest research. I can't find anything to back this up on the internet. Has anyone heard of this? Thanks.
I have taken this drug past 2-1/2 yrs & recently I developed a tightness in my throat. I immediately associated this symptom to Fosamax, however, my Rhumatologist stated this could be from the Fosamax OR it could be unrelated. I've had throat lumps due to anxiety in the past but when this happened I went right for the Fosamax because I hate to take this drug. It is horrible. I'm afraid of the esophagal scares & I'm interested in knowing how long one can take it without any problems to the gut or esophagus. In answer to your questions re:40 mgs a week. I am taking 10mgs. daily for four days only not the seven. My latest dexa 6/00, showing an improvement. Maintenance is 5 mgs. daily, so I figured 40 mgs. a week is helping & hopefully will not cause any SERIOUS side effects. I did go off Fosamax for 5 weeks to see what my throat did & it did finally go away, I have resumed taking it & noticed nothing, so I am attributing my problem to "nerves". I am wondering, however, would your mother take 20 mgs one day & 20 mgs. a couple days later? I would ask my M.D. how to take it. My Rhum also told me a once a wk Fosamax is soon to be out so we could take it only the one time & be done for a week. This waiting for 1/2 hr & drinking 6-8 ozs water & nothing to eat or drink & no lying down is for the birds. I can't wait until this drug is approved. I must acknowledge the benefits I've received from taking Fosamax, my density has improved 8.0% in 2 yrs. so I am thankful for this. JMK
