This is a paradox frequently encountered. It is called pseudoaddiction: inadequate medication by the doctor resulting in drug seeking behavior by the patient. It is well described and common. The best approach is to ask for a long acting med with breakthrough meds for flairups and to realize that only 60-80% of pain should be covered by meds. This may require switching to another doc.

: Dr. Whitworth,

: I read ally's post about her upcoming detox. I feel so bad for her and understand her nevousness about what she is getting into. It really hurts to know that there is nothing that I could say that will make it any easier for her. (By the way, it doesn't sound like this rehab has all it's baskets straight.)

: My question about addiction is this. When you are seeing a doctor that you know will only give you so much of a drug, but you know that it will take more than what you are getting, how should you deal with that? If you take more, you get the pain relief, however you will either run out too soon or your doc will cut you off.
: I agree that everything should be done under a doc's care and supervision, but with the wide discrepancy of the different doctor's willingness to dispense certain amounts of drugs, what would your advice be to a chronic pain sufferer?
: I know this sounds like a paradox, but it is a real problem that people encounter. I am just curious about your view on the subject.

: Thanks for your time and input,
: John V
