: : IS A MOVEMENT DISORDER SPECIALIST BETTER THAN MY NEOROLOGIST? THE NEARIST IS 60 MILES AWAY . I AM NOT SURE ABOUT CHANGING DOCTORS. I AM REALLY UNSETTLED ABOUT THIS. ANY ADVICE WOULD BE APPRECIATED.
: IMHO --- YES YES YES!!!!!!
: I just had a friend's father-in-law, who went thru several doctors, including a neurologist in the med center emergency where there IS a Movement Disorder Clinic (MDC), tell him he did not have PD and they didn't know what was wrong with him or how to help him. He almost didn't go to the MDC because so far all he had heard for two years was that he couldn't be helped and every pill he'd tried didn't work; he was convinced he wouldn't find anything different. His son made sure he got to the MDC and the doctor there told him he may NOT have PD, but that he COULD be helped. I'm not sure what med besides Paxil he put him on, but I do know his tremor is much improved, he drove himself to the next appointment, and even asked for a higher dosage in his med for increased benefit. I am so relieved FOR him. He was ready to throw in the towel. I had a similar experience as a young person with PD. I went for years without being properly diagnosed. The MDC (when I finally went) also connected me to a whole community of help; very NICE and CARING people. Please don't hesitate! GO GO GO!!! If you don't like it, you can go back to your former doctor. But these special M.D. neurologists know PD and similar disorders and the regimin of treatment intimately. Even the specialists fields have specialized. Loyalty to a doctor can impede your quest for your own best interests (I've been there done that.) Go - and GOD Bless!
Carole and Lisa have given you excellent advice. I've also "been there, done that." Went to a regular neurologist for 9 years, who agreed I "probably" had PD, but would prescribe nothing other than Sinemet and Eldepryl, telling me the new agonists were only for people who couldn't take Sinemet. Finally went to a MDS. What a difference!! DON'T WAIT! GO NOW!
