This article is a sumary of the latest and future research and can be found ob Dr. Koop's web site. The Parkinson's Action Network says leading scientists describe Parkinson's disease as the neurological disorder most likely to produce a breakthrough therapy or cure, or both within this decade. The organization said several preventive and restorative strategies show great promise -neural cell transplantation, neural growth factors, gene therapy techniques and new surgical procedures-and research has uncovered much important new information. For instance, the vast majority of Parkinson's cases "do not relate to genetic factors". One researcher complained that NIH is only funding 1-2 studies on transplantation research which will take decades to get an answer. He stated if 4-5 studies were funded the search for an answer would be completed much sooner.
