: mild or not, post-polio is a reality. and i agree, medical profession is pretty much clueless except for a handful of pps docs. i had polio at age 5 and realized 40 plus years later what was going on. tried several meds. some help! and yes, depression appears to be common. mild exercise and diet changes also helped me. biggest problem is fatigue. keep in touch, i too am struggling with the residual effects and the lack of understanding. i suspect many more people are experiencing post polio syndrome, not fibromyalgia! gary z
: : I had polio when I was learning to walk as an infant. It was a very mild case, but now I am wondering if perhaps it may have returned. I mentioned this to the doctor who is treating me for bursitis. I feel alone and scared as I know what this disease has done to family and friends. What type of tests can I insist on to either confirm this is wahat I have or not. Thank you for any support you can give me. Mary

: Hi Mary, I can't tell you what kind of test to request, but I can tell you that you aren't the only one going through this. My mother had polio when she was pregnant with me. Even though I didn't have it directly, I'm having all the classic symptoms of post-polio. I have found (and my mother was told this also) that exercise is the best preventitive to the pain and stiffness that comes from post-polio. I know it's hard, but low impact exercise, such as swimming, really does help. I want to wish you luck. I'm afraid you probably won't get a lot of support from the medical field. They seem to have forgotten that polio was once a major problem. Hang in there, and don't get depressed. That's your worst enemy. Good Luck! Susan
