The AIUM (american institute in ultrasound medicine) recommends three sonograms per pegnancy. One in the first trimester (between 5-12 weeks another in the second trimester ( after 16 weeks) and one more in the third trimester. Unfortunately many insurances do not cover for sonograms unless the Dr. suspects a problem.
The only way to know for sure if this is an ectopic is to do a blood test alled "quatitavtive Beta-hcg" and correlate it with a transvaginal sonogram performed by a fetal sonography expert at an accredited(by AIUM) ultrasound lab.
