Mucous Plug

This may be a gross question, but what is it like when a pregnant girl is losing her mucous plug? I don't remember losing mine with my first pregnancy. How early could it happen and what does it look like? There has been a lot of discharge this morning and I am a little concerned about it being my mucous plug. Does losing it happen all at once or can it happen over a small amout of time? I have 11 weeks until my due date and think this may be too early to be my plug. Please give any advice you can. Thank you!
