: I really need advice from anyone who knows anything about this subject or has been through this before. I am 21 and I just found out I am pregnant. The father and I just broke up (before I found out I was pregnant). He begged me to have an abortion but I decided not to. He is beginning to accept it now. I don't have my hopes up real high but I know that he will be there for the child when he can and he will provide for the baby financially. So, I do know that he will be in the picture. I also have a very supportive family and friends. But, what are my rights? His rights? Our baby's rights? Is this something that we can work out between the two of us or should we go to a lawyer. Are there any kind of resources that I should use or look into using. I am a college student--but will have my degree by the time the baby is born. I just need advice on things I need to do legally before the baby is born. I am also seeking any other advie that anyone can give me. Thanks for your help!!!
I wouldn't get a lawyer involved without first checking to see what legal help is available from state agencys. They will make sure you get support payments. While custody rights are important they can't be determined now and they are never permanent. They can be challenged due to changing circumstances. I hope for the child's sake the father does request some shared custodial rights
