: : How common is it to have a false normal reading on this test???
: They gave me the AFP test and they told me that my baby may have Down Synd. I was uncomfortable for the rest of my pregnancy. I wish i had not taken the test.
i had an elevated AFP level and was told i was at high risk for a child with spinalbiffida, anyway i went to a specialist and it was calculated wrong. see the fetus excretes the hormone alpha-feta-protein(AFP) throughout pregnancy and basically my due date was miscalculated with when they drew the blood and causing a false positive result. so if you have any questions or fears whatsoever ask to be referred to a specialist, an amniocentesis could be done to verify any true abnormalities, i dont know why they even due these tests, cause what are you really gonna due with that kind of information, except be disappointed, upset, and try to be prepared.
