Reiter's syndrome: named after German bacteriologist Hans Reiter. Syndrome consists of conjunctivitis (inflammation of the whites of the eyes), urethritis (inflammation of the urethra), arthritis. Urethritis usually appears first, occurs mainly in young men. Etiology unknown. Prognosis generally good; however, recurrences are common. Treatment, no specific therapy. Broad-spectrum antibiotics are used for urethritis. Arthritis treated symptomatically. No treatment is necessary for conjunctivitis. (Taber's Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary)
