: : : I have been recently diagnosed wiht RSD in my left knee. No one can seem to tell me anything about this disorder. I am interrested in signs, symptoms, treatment, and prognosis. Any help or any web sites I can search would be appreciated.

: : Barbara,
: : Rsd usally starts with excessive pain for the injury, cold or hot, mottling, sensitivity to light touch or a breeze, dusky color or red or a death white color to the affected limb. Diagnosis is by use of 3 phase bone scan, thermogram, and 2 positive sympathetic nerve blocks. if positive doc will follow up with more sympathetic blocks usually 59 days apart for a total of 5-8 in a series. After the block the pain will come back witha vengeance but will calm down after a while usually anywhere from 1 hr to 3-4 months of pain relief. There are lumbar ganglion blocks for legs as well as epidural blocks which will affect the motor nerves as well and thus yu wouldn't be able to move legs until it wears off. After blocks you need someone to drive you home from the hospital.
: : If RSD is caught and treated in the first 3-6 months there is a good chance for remission especially for a child or teenager.

: : Everyone's response to the blocks is individual and there's no way of telling how a patient will respond to them. If RSd is left untreated it can become very aggressive and then very difficult to get under control. Surgery and further injury should be avoided at all costs. If surgery is unavoidable then some docs like to give a block before, during, and after surgery. Or sometimes a continuous block is given by some docs.

: If you want to use the boards, do not post websites that advertise specific business info, such as doctor's websites. No URL's may be posted that advertise specific products. (if they just have ads on them, but are not for profit, that is fine).
